Why do so many poor make stupid decisions? There are now 1.3 million Dutch people who live below the poverty line. Benefit forms going like hot cakes on the municipal counter and food banks are working overtime - now these institutions are even providing waiting lists. What is going on? Crisis, of course. But what else? Margaret Thatcher, the first female prime minister of England, once said that poverty is ‘a fundamental character flaw’ in an interview in 1978. Not many Dutch politicians would go so far now, but that the solution should be sought particularly in the individual, is no longer an exceptional opinion anymore.

What about the rich? Prism of Wealth highlights the issue described by de Correspondent’s article “Why poor do stupid things” from an opposite angle and represents the extent to which wealth and geography are intertwined. The project shows the international wealth of the hundred richest people in the world, wherein the degree of richness is expressed in the density of the color.

Prism of Wealth is a contribution to the Research Project of the Graphic Design Festival Breda 2014 and was developed through a partnership with de Correspondent.
